Newberry takes two from Wingate Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The Newberry College Wolves swept a doubleheader at Wingate University Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Pyler Athletic Field. Newberry won the first game 7-4, while picking up an 11-1 victory in game two to improve to 18-15 overall and 11-8 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 21-11 overall and 12-11 in the conference.

Game One: Newberry 7, Wingate 4

Jacob Bass went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Newberry offense in game one. Albert Baur and JoJo Bradley each had a hit and an RBI, while Robert Kosch and Jeff Sneed also drove in runs for the Wolves. Brandan Sheridan was four-for-five with two doubles and a run scored.

Redshirt senior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was two-for-four with a homer to lead the Wingate attack in game one. Sophomore outfielder Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added an RBI and a run scored, while seniors Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) and Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) each drove in a run. Freshman designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) went two-for-four with a double for the Bulldogs.

Wingate took the lead in the bottom of the second when Cherry connected on his third homer of the year, a solo shot to left center to make it 1-0.

Newberry answered with five runs in the third. Baur got it started with an RBI single, while Sneed and Alex Kirby followed by drawing back-to-back bases-loaded walks. Bass followed with an RBI groundout, while a Wingate error allowed the fifth run to score, making it 5-1.

Bradley added an RBI in the sixth to make it 6-1. A walk and a single put two on base for the Bulldogs in the seventh, while Prince's RBI groundout made it 6-2.

Bass led off the eighth with a double, then scored on a Kosch sacrifice fly to push the lead back to five. Barnette's RBI single in the eighth made it 7-3.

Wingate threatened in the ninth. A pair of walks put two on with two outs for Spitz, who delivered with an RBI single to make it a three-run game, bringing the tying run to the plate. Newberry reliever Mike DeLee ended the game with a strikeout.

Wesley Camp got the win for the Wolves, moving to 5-2. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking one. DeLee allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings to earn his first save of the year. Redshirt freshman right-hander Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in six innings, striking out four and walking five to fall to 3-4 on the year.

Game Two: Newberry 11, Wingate 1

Baur was three-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored, while Sheridan went three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Newberry attack in game two. Sneed added two RBI and two runs scored, while Kosch had an RBI and two runs scored for the Wolves.

Spitz had a triple and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Barnette had an RBI, while redshirt junior catcher Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Newberry jumped out to a four-run lead in the second, doing all the damage with two outs. Kosch got it started with an RBI single, while a wild pitch made it 2-0. RBI singles from Baur and Sheridan put the Wolves on top by four.

Wingate got on the board in the fourth. Spitz led off the frame with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Barnette to make it 4-1.

Sneed's RBI groundout in the fifth pushed the lead back to four. The Wolves plated six runs in the sixth to push the advantage to 10. Baur, Sheridan and Camp drove home the first three runs of the frame, while an error allowed the fourth run to score. RBI doubles from Sneed and Nolan Schrenker made it 11-1.

Jonathan Rosenberger got the win, moving to 1-3. He allowed a run on six hits in seven innings, striking out eight without walking a batter. Redshirt freshman right-hander Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The two teams are back in action Sunday, wrapping up the three-game series at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
