Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs out-hit visiting Newberry College 11-4 Sunday afternoon, but five walks and five hit batsmen helped the Wolves prevail 6-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Newberry completes the three-game sweep, improving to 20-15 overall and 12-8 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 21-12 overall and 12-12 in the conference.
Jacob Bass was two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored.
Albert Baur had a hit, RBI and run scored, while
Nolan Schrenker went one-for-three with an RBI and
Jeff Sneed added an RBI and a run scored for the Wolves.
Seniors
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.),
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) each drove in a run for Wingate, with Prince collecting two hits including a double. Sophomore
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.), junior
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) and senior
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added two hits each for the Bulldogs.
Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. After a popout to start the inning, freshman
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) started the rally with a one-out single. Barnette and Cherry followed with singles to load the bases, while a sacrifice fly from Prince made it 1-0.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Krebs led off the frame with a single, went to second on a sacrifice, then scored on an RBI single from Godinez.
Newberry scored four runs on one hit in the seventh to take the lead. Two hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, while Sneed drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run. Schrenker followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, while a two-run single from Bass made it 4-2.
Wingate cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame. Prince started the inning with a double, while Krebs followed with a single. An error loaded the bases with no outs. Spitz drew a bases-loaded walk with one out to make it 4-3, but Newberry got out of the jam with an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.
Newberry took a 5-3 lead in the eighth when
Robert Kosch scored on a Wingate error. Baur was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth to make it 6-3. All six runs that scored for Newberry reached base by either walk or hit batsman.
Cole Cromer go the win to move to 5-3. He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one. Senior right-hander
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, allowing four runs on one hit in six innings, striking out seven and walking three to fall to 4-2.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m.
