Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) drove in sophomore infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) with a two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning Sunday afternoon, giving the visiting Bulldogs a 4-3 victory at Georgia Southwestern University in NCAA Division II baseball action. Wingate takes the weekend series, improving to 24-17 overall. The Hurricanes fall to 12-18 on the year.
Barnette went four-for-five on the day, with a double, RBI and run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielder
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was three-for-four with a run scored, while senior first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added two hits and an RBI.
Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Godinez drew a one-out walk, then scored on an RBI double from Barnette. Cherry followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs added a run in the second. Freshman infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) started the rally with a two-out single, then scored on a GSW error to give the 'Dogs a three-run lead.
The Hurricanes got on the board in the fourth when
Brett Burgess was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single from
Zach Barron in the sixth got Georgia Southwestern within a run.
The Hurricanes tied the game in the seventh, when
Devyn Newberry reached on a two-out single, stole second, went to third on a single, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-3.
Wingate regained the lead in the top of the 10th. Barnette led off the frame with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice from Cherry. Krebs plated him with a two-out RBI single to make it 4-3.
Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-2 on the year. He allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out three and walking one.
Lance Shelton took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Mount Olive for a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
