Trojans take two from Bulldogs Wednesday

Mount Olive, N.C.----The University of Mount Olive Trojans rallied for a 9-8 victory over visiting Wingate University in game one of Wednesday's NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader. Mount Olive added an 8-6 victory in game two to improve 34-10 overall. Wingate falls to 24-19 on the season.

Game One: Mount Olive 9, Wingate 8

The Trojans erased a 6-1 deficit, taking their first lead in the final at-bat of the game. Kilgore Gailmard and Chris Leduc each drove in three runs for Mount Olive. Jason Morozowski and Justin Manning each went four-for-five with an RBI, while DeAndre Allen was three-for-three with four runs scored.

Freshman designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack, while sophomore infielder Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) also had two RBI for the Bulldogs. Seniors Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) both went two-for-two and drew three walks, scoring a pair of runs. Freshman infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-five with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while senior Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) went one-for-three with a double.

Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Billings started the inning with a single, stole second, went to third on an error, then scored on a wild pitch. RBI groundouts from Clark and Barnette made it 3-0.

An RBI triple from Gailmard in the third made it 3-1. The Bulldogs scored three more runs in the fourth to take a five-run lead. Billings scored the first run of the inning on a passed ball, while Spitz plated the next run with an RBI double. Barnette added an RBI groundout to make it 6-1.

Mount Olive answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game. Leduc plated the first three runs of the frame with a three-run homer to left center. Zak Orrison added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-5.

Wingate pushed the lead back to three in the fifth on Brown's two-run double. The Trojans responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Gailmard's two-run double started the scoring, while an RBI single from Morozowski made it 8-8.

That would be the score in the bottom of the seventh. Allen started the frame with a single, then moved to second on a two-out bunt single. Manning drove home the game-winning run with a walk-off RBI single to left, giving Mount Olive a 9-8 victory.

Dario Santangelo got the win, moving to 1-0. He tossed two shutout innings, striking out five and walking two without allowing a hit. Sophomore right-hander Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) took the loss, allowing a run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning, falling to 0-2.

Game Two: Mount Olive 8, Wingate 6

Rob Shipman was two-for-three with a homer and three RBI to lead the Mount Olive attack. Joe Koehler added two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Leduc also homered for the Trojans.

Billings was three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Brown added a double and two RBI, while junior outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Senior infielder Brandon Wolf (Charlotte, N.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Spitz reached on a two-out double, then scored on an RBI double from Brown.

Mount Olive answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run scored on a passed ball, while a two-run double from Koehler made it 3-1. Shipman followed with an RBI single, while a bases-loaded walk from Orrison made it 5-1.

Wingate cut the lead to two in the second. Billings plated the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI single from Krebs made it 5-3.

Shipman connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to four. Leduc followed with a solo shot to make it 8-3.

Brown drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to make it 8-4. RBI singles from Wolf and Billings in the fifth made the final margin 8-6.

Hunter Barnett got the win, moving to 1-1. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three. Junior right-hander Thomas Young (Cary, N.C.) took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits in one-third of an inning, walking three to fall to 0-1.

Wingate returns to action Friday night, opening a three-game SAC series against Carson-Newman at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Eagles play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
