Bulldogs blast five homers in 14-3 win over Carson-Newman in series opener

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs connected on two solo shots and three different three-run homers Friday night en route to a 14-3 victory over visiting Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 25-19 overall and 14-14 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 23-19 overall and 11-17 in the conference. The Bulldogs have now blasted a nation's-best 66 homers this year.

Sophomore infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) went four-for-six with a double, two homers and four runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) and sophomore outfielder Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) each had a homer and four RBI, while senior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) went three-for-five with an RBI and three runs scored.

Bo Ausmus had a homer and two RBI to lead the Carson-Newman offense. Evan Jurjevic was one-for-four with an RBI for the Eagles.

Joe Tipton led off the game with a triple, then scored on an RBI single from Jurjevic to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

Wingate tied it in the bottom of the frame when Billings started things with a double to right, then scored on Brown's RBI single.

Billings led off the third inning with his seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to left to put Wingate on top 2-1. Godinez followed with a single, then scored on an RBI groundout from Barnette to push the lead to two.

Carson-Newman answered with two runs in the fourth to tie it. Ausmus did the damage, connecting on his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center to make it 3-3.

Wingate responded by scoring the last 11 runs of the game. The Bulldogs scored three in the fifth to take the lead for good. Spitz led off the inning with a single, then stole second. After Clark reached on a walk, Barnette blasted his 10th homer of the season to left center, a three-run bomb to make it 6-3.

Wingate scored three more in the sixth inning. Godinez led off with a single, then moved to second when Spitz drew a walk. They both came home when Brown connected on his eighth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left center to push the lead to six.

The Bulldogs put up four more runs in the seventh. Billings reached on a one-out single, then scored on an RBI single from Godinez. After a walk, Clark hit Wingate's third three-run homer in as many innings, his seventh of the year to make it 13-3.

Wingate got one more run in the eighth inning when Billings connected on his second homer of the night and eighth of the season, a solo shot to left to make the final margin 14-3.

Senior right-hander Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, moving to 5-3. He allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking five. Junior right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Quinton Yocom took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out three and walking five to fall to 3-4.

The two teams return to action Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wingate will celebrate Senior Day at 12:30 p.m., honoring seven seniors playing in their final home games at Wingate.
