Spitz drives in seven on Senior Day as Bulldogs and Eagles split doubleheader

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) had two homers and seven RBI in game two of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader, leading the Bulldogs to a 9-3 victory over visiting Carson-Newman University at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Eagles took game one 7-4 on Saturday. Wingate moves to 26-20 overall, finishing the SAC season at 15-15 in league play. Carson-Newman goes to 24-20 overall and 12-18 in the conference.

Game One: Carson-Newman 7, Wingate 4

Brandon Roberts went four-for-five with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Carson-Newman attack. Joe Tipton added a homer and two RBI, while Bo Ausmus had an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles.

Junior outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game one. Freshman Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) added two doubles and two RBI, while senior infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) contributed a double and a run scored.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Tipton lined the first pitch of the game over the fence down the right field line to make it 1-0. Roberts added an RBI double, while an RBI double from Evan Jurjevic made it 3-0. Tipton's RBI single in the second put Carson-Newman on top by four.

Wingate got on the board in the third. A pair of two out walks put runners on first and second for Brown. The freshman connected on his 17th double of the season, plating a pair of runs to give him 51 RBI on the year, cutting the lead in half.

The Eagles took a 5-2 lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Roberts.

The Bulldogs responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Prince reached on a two-out double, while Krebs followed by connecting on his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to left center to make it a one-run game.

Roberts and Ausmus connected on solo homers in the seventh to stretch the Carson-Newman lead back to three at 7-4.

That would be enough for Vince Apicella, who went the distance to improve to 7-4 on the year. He allowed four runs on seven hits in nine innings, striking out eight and walking five while throwing 147 pitches. Freshman right-hander Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed four earned runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Game Two: Wingate 9, Carson-Newman 3

Spitz was four-for-four with two homers and a double, driving in seven while scoring twice. Prince added a homer, while senior infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was one-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored.

Roberts went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Carson-Newman offense in game two. Ausmus and Ryan Addington also drove in runs for the Eagles, while Tipton was two-for-four with a run scored.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the second when Prince lined his fifth homer of the year off the scoreboard in left, a solo shot to put the 'Dogs on top.

Carson-Newman tied the game in the third on an RBI single from Roberts. The Eagles scored two more runs in the fifth to take the lead. An RBI single from Addington put Carson-Newman on top, while an RBI single from Ausmus gave the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.

Wingate had the answer in the fifth, scoring three times to regain the lead. A Godinez walk and Krebs single put runners on first and second for Spitz. The senior blasted his 12th homer of the season over the fence in right, a three-run shot to give the 'Dogs a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs added five more runs in the sixth. An RBI single from Godinez pushed the lead to two. A walk would then load the bases for Spitz. He crushed the first pitch he saw, hitting the top of the batter's eye in dead center field to clear the bases with a grand slam, giving him 13 homers on the year. Earlier in the day Spitz entered the top 10 in SAC history in career hits. He is second league history with 21 triples, while ranking seventh with 211 runs scored. Spitz has reached base safely in every game this season.

Wingate connected on nine homers this weekend, hitting five Friday night and four more on Saturday. The Bulldogs have connected on 70 homers this season, which leads all of NCAA Division II. Eight different Bulldogs have at least five homers this year, with Spitz leading the way with his 13. Sophomore Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) has connected on 10 long balls, while Brown and sophomore Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) have eight homers each.

Sophomore right-hander Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-2 on the year. He tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out one. Carson Bryant took the loss, allowing a run on one hit in one inning, falling to 1-4.

Next up for the Bulldogs is the SAC Tournament. Wingate will be the number five seed in the tournament, which begins Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs will take on eighth-seeded Carson-Newman Thursday at 4 p.m. at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C.
