Wingate, N.C.----The number five seed Wingate University women's lacrosse team opens South Atlantic Conference tournament play Tuesday, visiting number four seed Catawba College for a 6 p.m. quarterfinal at Shuford Stadium on the Catawba campus. The Indians won the regular season game 17-10 on March 18. Wingate is 9-7 overall, while Catawba is 8-8 overall (

Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.J.) led all scorers with six points, thanks to four goals and two assists. Indian freshman attack
Caroline Beggs (St. Johns, Fla.) had four goals, while freshman attack
Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C.) posted three goals and one assist.
For Wingate, junior team captain
Erin Murphy (Mooresville, N.C.) had four goals to lead the visitors. Sophomore midfield
Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) had one goal and two assists, while freshman attack
Jaclyn Chiesa (Canton, Ga.) had two goals.
Most recently, Wingate edged Newberry 10-9 on Saturday to qualify for the SAC post-season. Wingate freshman goalie
Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) saved the Wolves' final attempt with 19 seconds remaining to preserve the victory. For her efforts, Hinkle was named the AstroTurf SAC women's lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Saturday, April 11.
Wingate has won nine games as a second-year program this season, compared to two victories during the team's first intercollegiate campaign in 2014. Murphy has a team-high 35 goals. Chiesa and sophomore midfield
Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) have 30 goals each. Wingate has balance, as Murphy, Chiesa and Andrews have four teammates with 13 goals or better.
Beggs leads Catawba with 45 goals. Corace has 39 goals. The two teammates have 17 assists and 14 assists, respectively. Wingate and Catawba were tied 6-6 at intermission of the March 18 encounter. Six different Catawba players scored one goal each to turn a 10-8 edge into a 16-8 advantage in the second half.
