Forest City, N.C.----For the first time since last year's South Atlantic Conference tournament, the Wingate University Bulldogs were held scoreless. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs fell 9-0 to the second-seeded Newberry Wolves on day two of the SAC Tournament at McNair Field. Newberry improves to 34-16, while Wingate falls to 27-21 overall.
Jeff Sneed went two-for-three with a double, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Newberry offense.
JoJo Bradley was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored, while
Robert Kosch and
Nolan Schrenker each drove in a run for the Wolves.
Sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double to lead the Wingate offense. Senior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
After four scoreless innings, Newberry got on the board in the fifth. The first run scored on an error, while Kosch followed with an RBI double. Sneed delivered a three-run double in the sixth to push the lead to five. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
An RBI single from Bradley in the seventh made it 7-0. Schrenker's RBI single in the eighth put the Wolves on top by nine.
Wesley Camp got the win for Newberry, improving to 9-2. He went the distance, allowing six hits while striking out six without walking a batter. He threw 118 pitches on the day. Redshirt freshman right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-5. He allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings, striking out seven without walking a batter.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, taking on Anderson at 12 p.m. in an elimination game.
