Forest City, N.C.----The fifth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs blasted a pair of two-out homers in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday afternoon, rallying for a 5-3 victory over second-seeded Newberry College on day four of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament at McNair Field. Wingate improves to 29-21 overall, advancing to play in another SAC Tournament game Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. Newberry is eliminated from the tournament, falling to 34-18.
SAC Freshman of the Year
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) also homered, while senior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-three with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored.
Brandan Sheridan homered to lead the Newberry offense.
Jacob Bass also drove in a run for the Wolves, while
Jeff Sneed and
Albert Baur each went two-for-four.
After five scoreless innings, Newberry got on the board in the top of the sixth.
Nolan Schrenker lined a one-out double down the left field line, then went to third on a Baur single. Schrenker scored on a double steal to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Wingate responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) started the inning with a single, then moved to second a single from
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.). Both moved up on a sacrifice bunt, while Krebs would then score on a passed ball to tie the game. Spitz drove home Billings with an RBI groundout to give the 'Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
Newberry tied the game in the seventh when Sneed scored on a two-out, RBI single from Bass, making it 2-2. Sheridan connected on a two-out solo homer to left field in the eighth to put the Wolves on top 3-2.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the eighth. Spitz got it started with a two-out single, then stole second base. Brown then connected on the ninth homer of his freshman season, taking a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field to put Wingate on top 4-3. Clark followed with his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot to left to give the Bulldogs a two-run cushion heading to the ninth.
Junior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) shut down Newberry in the ninth. A single and a hit batsman put two on with one out for the Wolves, but Brown induced a flyout and groundout to end the game.
Brown got the win, moving to 7-4. He allowed two runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out one without walking a batter. Junior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) had a solid start for the Bulldogs, allowing just one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out six without walking a batter.
Jonathan Rosenberger took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking two.
The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday night, playing in their third straight elimination game. Wingate will face the winner of the Catawba vs. Tusculum contest. The 'Dogs will take the field at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night at McNair Field.
