Bulldogs down Trojans in battle of SAC unbeatens

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs remained undefeated on the season, knocking off Anderson University 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The 'Dogs handed the Trojans their first loss of the year, leaving Wingate as the only SAC team without a loss this year. The Bulldogs improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while Anderson falls to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Anderson entered the game having outscored its opponents 28-2 in five matches.

Wingate got on the board in the 14th minute, when senior forward Victoria Fichman (Matthews, N.C.) took a perfect pass from junior Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) in the left side of the box and lined one past the keeper for her first goal as a Bulldog.

Wingate added to its lead 11 minutes before intermission. A Corner kick from senior midfielder AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) was placed right in front of the goal, where freshman forward Gabby Fleischli (Highland Ranch, Colo.) was there, finding the back of the net for the first time in her career, making it 2-0.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into halftime, despite Anderson holding a 6-4 edge in shots. Wingate collected three shots on goal, compared to Anderson's two.

The Trojans got on the board with 30 minutes remaining in regulation, with Marie Yasmine Alidou taking a cross from Kenzie Van Heusen and lining one past a diving keeper, netting her sixth goal of the season to make it 2-1.

Anderson finished the night with a 12-11 advantage in shots, with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Each team had three corner kicks on the night. Sophomore Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) had five saves for the Bulldogs. Abby Helm collected three saves for the Trojans.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Queens at 5 p.m.
