#16 Bulldogs remain unbeaten with 1-0 win at Newberry Sunday

Newberry, S.C.----The 16th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their sixth victory of the year Sunday afternoon, getting an early goal in a 1-0 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 6-0-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Wingate wasted no time getting on the board Sunday afternoon, with senior midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) finding the back of the net 2:21 into the opening half. It is the first goal of the season for the first team All-SAC and All-Region midfielder, to go along with his league-best five assists.

The Bulldogs looked to add to their lead in the 22nd minute, but a header from senior Cameron Burrows (Cary, N.C.) hit the post.

Wingate took its 1-0 lead to halftime, holding a decisive 13-1 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs held a 6-0 edge in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second half, with the Bulldogs adding nine more shots compared to Newberry's five.

The Bulldogs ended the match with a 22-6 advantage in shots, which included a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. Gadsby and sophomore Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) led the Bulldogs with five shots each, getting four shots on goal from Gadsby. Wingate also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) got the win, collecting one save to notch his fourth shutout of the season. Brad Dixon had 11 saves for the Wolves.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday for a key regional contest at Limestone. The Bulldogs and Saints met twice last season, with the 'Dogs prevailing 1-0 in the regular season and Limestone winning 1-0 in overtime in the NCAA regional semifinals. The Saints are ranked 12th in the NSCAA top 25 poll.
