Bulldogs use balanced attack to pick up third straight win

Wingate, N.C.----Seven Bulldogs scored at least eight points Monday night, with five scoring in double figures to lead Wingate University to a 94-86 victory over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Bulldogs have now won 10 straight against Tusculum.

Junior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 19 points and six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, going four-of-five from the field and 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Senior guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) contributed 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, while junior Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 12 points while junior Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) chipped in with 11 points. Junior center Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) collected nine points, five rebounds and two blocks for the Bulldogs.

Darius Carter and Javon Price had 18 points each to lead the Tusculum attack, combining to go six-for-nine from beyond the arc. Chase Mounce added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Kendall Patterson had 17 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals.

A Mounce bucket gave Tusculum an early 12-9 lead, but a 6-0 Wingate run, capped by a Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) layup put the 'Dogs on top 15-12. A layup and three from Price put the Pioneers on top 24-24, but a pair of Doyle triples put Wingate back on top.

The Bulldogs used a 16-4 run to take a double-digit lead. Xavier Griffin had four points and an assist in the flurry, while a Dominguez triple capped the spurt. A Patterson three helped Tusculum trim the deficit to five with under two minutes to go, but three Lolar free throws helped the Bulldogs go back on top by eight. Cory Fagan made a pair of free throws in the final minute, cutting Wingate's halftime lead to six at 45-39.

A Doyle jumper and Keith Griffin layup put the Bulldogs on top by double figures four minutes into the second half. A Cureton jumper and Lolar triple pushed the advantage to 18 at the 13:09 mark. A Carter three-point play trimmed the deficit to 14, but a Lolar layup and Baez jumper stretched the advantage to 19 with 9:48 remaining.

A Carter three and Price tip-in, followed by a Patterson three got the Pioneers within 10 at the 3:05 mark. A Keith Griffin putback pushed the lead back to 12, but Carter responded with a three to make it 87-78 with 51 seconds to go. Xavier Griffin answered with a pair of free throws with 39 seconds left, not allowing Tusculum to get closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs shot 48.4 percent from the field, shooting 55.6 percent in the first half. Wingate hit six-of-25 shots from three-point range (24 percent) while going 28-of-35 at the free throw line (80 percent). Tusculum shot 45.1 percent from the field, hitting 12-of-27 shots from beyond the arc (44.4 percent). Wingate held a 42-37 rebounding advantage, outscoring the Pioneers 40-24 in the paint. The Bulldogs converted 10 Tusculum turnovers into 16 points, while TC held a 15-8 edge in second-chance points.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba for an 8 p.m. start, playing its fourth game in eight days.
