Hickory, N.C.----The top-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs remained the lone team in all of NCAA Division II men's soccer without a loss or tie Saturday night, getting an 88th minute goal to pick up a 1-0 win at Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 13-0 overall and 10-0 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 10-4-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the conference. The victory gives Wingate's Gary Hamill his 300th career victory.
"It's a milestone for me personally," head coach
Gary Hamill says. "I've been very fortunate to have been surrounded by great players, assistant coaches and the support from the Wingate administration."
The teams went to halftime tied 0-0 despite Wingate holding a 5-2 advantage in shots, including a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Wingate got on the board with 2:30 remaining in regulation win All-SAC and All-Region midfielder
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) found the back of the net, ripping a header from
Nate Evans (Greenville, N.C.) into the corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Evans registered his second assist of the year.
The Bulldogs finished the night with a 13-4 advantage in shots, holding a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Wingate took five of the eight corner kicks on the night.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting seventh-ranked Tusculum on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m.
