Wingate, N.C.----The top-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs wrapped up their first-ever undefeated and untied regular season Saturday night, defeating No. 25 Tusculum College 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate ends the regular season 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the SAC, while Tusculum falls to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the conference. The Bulldogs are the only team in NCAA Division I or II men's soccer without a loss or tie this season.
Wingate got on the board in the 13th minute, when a cross from sophomore forward
Nate Evans (Greenville, N.C.) was headed into the goal by a Tusculum defender, making it 1-0.
The Bulldogs took a two-goal lead with 20 minutes left in the first half, when a lead pass from
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) found
Mateo Correa (Medellin, Colombia) towards the corner. He sent a cross to the top of the box, where senior
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) was there to net his fifth goal of the year on Senior Night.
Tusculum cut into the lead in the 32nd minute, when
Tyler Linkous took the rebound off a save and scored his third goal of the year, making it 2-1.
Wingate ended the night with a 10-5 advantage in shots, holding the Pioneers to just one shot in the second half. The Bulldogs took nine shots on goal, while Tusculum registered two shots on goal. Juul and Ander led the way with three shots apiece for the Bulldogs.
All-American
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) registered one save on the night, while
Jorge Alvarez had eight saves for the Pioneers.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday night, hosting Brevard College in the opening round of the SAC Tournament.
