Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brevard knocks off #1 Bulldogs 1-0 in SAC Tournament quarterfinals

Wingate, N.C.----The top-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs out-shot eighth-seeded Brevard College 24-6 Tuesday night, but the Tornados scored the lone goal early in the first half en route to a 1-0 upset in the opening round of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference men's soccer tournament. The Tornados improve to 8-8-1 overall, advancing to Friday's semifinals. Wingate suffers its first setback of the year, falling to 14-1 overall.

The Bulldogs are the only team in NCAA men's soccer that did not lose or tie a game in the regular season. Wingate had not trailed in an official game before Tuesday night. It is also the first loss at Pride Park since the 2013 SAC Tournament. Wingate was 22-0-2 at home since the start of the 2014 season.

Brevard took advantage of a miscue by the Bulldog defense just five minutes into the opening half. Gabriel Garcia was there, firing a low liner into the net to give the Tornados the lead.

Wingate dominated possession all night. The best chance in the first half came when a header from Elma N'For (Yaoundé, Cameroon) hit the post in the 43rd minute. Junior Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) ripped a shot from the top of the box 30 seconds later, but Heath Turner was there for the save.

The Tornados took the 1-0 lead into halftime despite Wingate holding an 11-3 advantage in shots.

The Bulldogs piled up 13 shots in the second half, but could never find the back of the net, despite plenty of chances. The Best chance came in the 65th minute, when Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Ross went to the left corner, but Turner was there for the diving save.

Ander served one towards the upper corner with 20 minutes remaining, but Turner made another diving save. Wingate took eight shots the final 20 minutes, but were unable to get one past Turner.

Wingate's 24-6 advantage in shots included a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also took 10 of the 12 corner kicks on the night. Ander piled up six shots on the night, while N'For added four shots. Turner collected seven saves to preserve the shutout. Sophomore Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had two saves for the Bulldogs.

Wingate will now await to hear its postseason fate. The Bulldogs have been the top-ranked team in the NCAA Southeast Region rankings each of the last two weeks. The top two seeds in the regional will host opening round contests next weekend.
