Bulldogs close out regular season with 2-0 win over Pioneers

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University All-American Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored a Senior Day goal, while junior Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) added a late goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 victory over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 10-5-1 overall and 8-3 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 10-5-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.

The first 45 minutes went scoreless, with the Bulldogs holding a 9-5 advantage in shots and the Pioneers taking two of the three shots on goal.

Wingate got on the board 12 minutes into the second half. Sophomore forward Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) sent a cross in front of the goal to Brunworth, who found the back of the net for the second time this year to give the 'Dogs the 1-0 advantage.

Wingate added to its lead in the final 90 seconds when Leyble beat the defense and fired one into the opposite corner of the net, her fourth goal of the season to make the final margin 2-0.

The Bulldogs out-shot Tusculum 16-9 on the day, with each team taking five shots on goal. Leyble had a match-high six shots, while Brunworth registered four shots. Junior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) had five saves to preserve the shutout. Miriah Martin had three saves for the Pioneers.

Wingate finishes the regular season in a tie for fourth at 8-3 in the league standings. The Bulldogs will open SAC Tournament play Tuesday, Nov. 1, traveling to Charlotte to take on Queens. The Bulldogs and Royals finished tied for fourth at 8-3, but Queens will host thanks to a 2-1 victory earlier this year. The jumbled SAC standings saw three teams, including Tusculum, finish tied for first at 8-2-1 in conference play, just ahead of Wingate and Queens.
