Augusta, Ga.----The Augusta University Jaguars closed the game on an 11-5 run Sunday afternoon, prevailing 76-72 over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II men's basketball action. The Jaguars improve to 5-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-4 on the season.
Keshun Sherrill had 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Augusta attack, while
Kyle Doyle added 16 points on seven-of-eight shooting.
Tamyrik Field contributed eight points, while
Ja'Shawn Brook and
Tyvez Moore had seven points apiece.
Senior forward
Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Wingate offense, going four-for-four from the field and three-for-three from beyond the arc. Senior
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) and sophomore
Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 12 points apiece, while junior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 points and seven boards.
A Sherrill triple three minutes into the contest gave the Jaguars an early 10-2 lead, but Lolar got Wingate within four with a pair of free throws. A Doyle three-point play stretched the Augusta lead to nine at the 13:44 mark, but threes from Baez and Lolar got the 'Dogs within three with 12 minutes to go. A Monroe layup with 10:24 remaining put the Jaguars on top 22-14.
Wingate trailed 29-20 with 6:53 to go, but used an 8-0 run, cutting the deficit to one on two jumpers and a three form freshman guard
Jeremy Williams (Monroe, N.C.). A pair of free throws from Griffin put Wingate on top with a minute to go, while a Baez three-point play made it 37-33 with 38 seconds remaining. A Doyle layup with 20 seconds left got the Jaguars within two at halftime.
A Lolar jumper and
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) triple put Wingate on top 50-45 with 14:49 to go in the second half, while two Dominguez free throws put the Bulldogs on top by seven. Kyle Doyle got the Jaguars within one with back-to-back layups, while Field put Augusta on top 55-54 with 9:44 remaining. Dominguez put the 'Dogs back on top with a three, but a triple from Sherrill at the 6:51 mark gave Augusta a 61-59 advantage.
Griffin tied it with a layup, while Anthanee Doyle put Wingate back on top with a pair of free throws, making it 67-65 with 3:49 remaining. Sherrill buried a three to put Augusta on top by two, while Sherrill's three-point play made it 72-67 with two minutes to go. Dominguez got the Bulldogs back within two with just eight seconds remaining. Wingate had a chance to tie it with five seconds to go, but a jumper from Baez would not go. Sherrill knocked down a pair of free throws on the other side to make the final margin 76-72.
Augusta shot 46.7 percent from the field, hitting five-of-14 shots from three-point range (35.7 percent). Wingate shot 40 percent from the field, going seven-of-21 from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). The Jaguars held a 41-37 rebounding advantage, with each team scoring 22 points in the paint. Augusta turned 12 Wingate turnovers into 17 points.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for an 8 p.m. start.
