Rock Hill, S.C.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles avenged a regular-season loss at Wingate University on Sunday afternoon, prevailing 2-1 against the Bulldogs in the 2016 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer championship match at Manchester Meadows. The Eagles improve to 16-3-1 on the year, while Wingate falls to 13-6-1 overall.
Sunday marked the seventh consecutive SAC Tournament championship game appearance for the Bulldogs. Wingate has three titles in the span, winning in 2011, 2013 and 2014. Carson-Newman defeated Wingate 1-0 in the 2015 SAC title match.
The Eagles scored in the 15th minute on Sunday, when
Julianne Herrity got a feed from
Varin Ness and netted her 18th goal of the year to make it 1-0.
Carson-Newman added to its lead with 18 minutes left in the first half when Ness set up
Holly Talbut-Smith for her eighth goal of the year, giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage heading to halftime.
Wingate got on the board with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation, when sophomore
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) found the back of the net for the eighth time this year off an assist from senior
Maggie Smith (Monroe, N.C.).
The Bulldogs nearly had the equalizer two minutes later, but a shot from junior
Kaitlyn Fletcher (Jacksonville, N.C.) hit the post.
Carson-Newman out-shot Wingate 19-17 on the day, with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Moore had two shots on goal for the Bulldogs, while All-American
Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) collected three shots on the afternoon, including a shot on goal.
Jacqueline Burns registered three saves for the Eagles. Junior
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected seven saves for the Bulldogs.
