Bulldogs stifle Tornados in 78-56 victory

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs held visiting Brevard College to 56 points on 36 percent shooting from the field Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 78-56 victory in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Senior center Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Wingate attack, going seven-of-12 from the field. Senior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) was five-for-seven from the field, collecting 13 points, five rebounds and two steals while sophomore guard Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 12 points and six boards. Junior guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) added nine points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Stevie Williams had 22 points to lead the Brevard attack, going nine-for-10 at the free throw line. D.J. Bostick, Harry Singh and Shelby Parris added six points each for the Tornados.

A pair of free throws from Singh gave Brevard an 8-4 lead with 12:34 remaining in the first half. Wingate responded with a 14-0 run, holding the Tornados scoreless for over six minutes. Baez had six points in the flurry. A Parris three got Brevard within five, but a three from Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) and a Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) layup pushed the lead to 11 with four minutes to go. A Griffin dunk made it 28-15 at the 3:08 mark, but a pair of Williams free throws got the Tornados within eight. A pair of Griffin free throws and a Lolar jumper gave the 'Dogs a 34-20 halftime advantage.

A Griffin dunk put the 'Dogs on top by 16 early in the second half. A Levi Lamb layup got Brevard within 13 at the 12:44 mark. Wingate countered with a 22-4 run to take a 31-point lead. Dominguez started the flurry with a three and a layup, while two more Dominguez triples and a Griffin bucket made it 68-37 with eight minutes left in the game. The Tornados got no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Wingate shot 43.5 percent from the field on the day, hitting six-of-19 shots from three-point range (31.6 percent). Brevard shot 36 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-17 shots from beyond the arc (41.2 percent). The Bulldogs held a 44-27 rebounding advantage, with an 18-7 edge in second chance points and 40-20 edge in points in the paint. Wingate converted 18 Brevard turnovers into 20 points.

The Bulldogs are back in action Dec. 31, traveling to Mount Olive for a 2 p.m. start. Wingate returns home Jan. 11, hosting Catawba at 8 p.m.
