Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second half surge helps Wingate take 56-35 SAC victory at Queens

Wingate, N.C.----After a relatively uneventful first half, the Wingate University women's basketball team took charge in the second half on the way to a 56-35 South Atlantic Conference victory over Queens University of Charlotte at Curry Arena. Wingate improves to 13-8 overall on the season with a 10-7 SAC ledger. The Bulldogs sweep the season series over Queens (4-18 overall, 2-15 SAC).

"I'm really proud of the team tonight," Wingate head women's basketball coach Ann Hancock says. "We got off to a slow start, but they kept battling." The victory allows Hancock to stay undefeated against the Royals as Wingate's head coach.

Senior forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) led the Bulldog offense with her 13 points. She also pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore center Marta Misckenko (Riga, Latvia) posted a season-high 12 points, converting six-of-nine field goal attempts and blocking two Royal shots. Senior center Alysia Hudson (Jacksonville, N.C.) completed three-of-three field goals for six points, adding a blocked shot to her statistical ledger.

"Morgan, Marta and Alysia all came in and gave us baskets when we needed them," Hancock says. "Redshirt junior guard Amber Neely (Charlotte, N.C.) played well. She has done a nice job of running the team."

Sophomore guard Carmen Richardson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) topped the Royal charts on the evening with her nine points, which included two made three-point shots. Following her lead was senior guard Karlesha Thompson (Richmond, Calif.) with eight markers. She also dished out four assists and recorded six boards on the night, leading the Royals' rebounding game.

"One game at a time is our focus right now," Hancock says. "We are looking forward to alumni day on Saturday." Wingate University women's basketball will host Brevard College (1-20 overall, 0-17 SAC) this Saturday (Feb. 13) at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs will also celebrate Play 4Kay Day during Saturday's alumni day festivities.  Queens will remain at home for its next match-up, a homecoming contest against Mars Hill University Saturday. Tip-off slated for 2 p.m.
