Bulldogs and Raiders split Saturday doubleheader

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs and Shippensburg University Raiders split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won game one 7-1, while dropping the second contest 10-8. The Bulldogs move to 3-4 overall, while the Raiders are now 2-2 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 7, Shippensburg 1

Junior outfielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) added a homer and two RBI, while sophomore Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) added two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

Shippensburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. A walk and single put runners on first and third, while a sacrifice fly from Tyler Betz made it 1-0.

That was all the scoring until the fifth inning. Branton plated the first run of the frame, tying the game with an RBI double. An RBI double from Billings gave the 'Dogs a 2-1 lead.

Wingate added five runs in the sixth inning. Krebs got it started with a two-run homer down the right field line to make it 4-1. Branton's second RBI double of the day pushed the lead to four, while RBI singles from Billings and freshman Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) made it 7-1.

Senior left-hander Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-1 on the year. He allowed a run on two hits in five innings, striking out five and walking three. Andy Crum took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed four runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Game Two: Shippensburg 10, Wingate 8

Dalton Hoiles
and Grant Hoover each drove in a pair of runs for Shippensburg in game two, while Cash Gladfelter added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Austin Allison had two hits, an RBI and run scored for the Raiders, while Ryan McMillen and Jake Kennedy each added an RBI for Shippensburg.

Billings had a double, two triples, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) was three-for-four with three RBI, while Little, Branton and Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) each added a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Shippensburg scored four times in the first, starting with a Hoiles RBI double. Allison added an RBI single, while a balk allowed the fourth run of the frame to score.

Wingate scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Billings walked, stole second, then scored on Turgeon's RBI single. A wild pitch allowed the second run to score, making it 4-2.

The Raiders scored four more runs in the second. Hoiles started the scoring with an RBI single, while RBI singles from Kennedy and Hoover, along with a Wingate error made it 8-2. Hoover added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to push the lead to seven.

Wingate scored three runs in the fourth to make it 9-5. Billings plated the first two runs with a two-run triple, while a wild pitch got the 'Dogs within four.

Gladfelter connected on a solo homer in the top of the fifth to give Shippensburg a five-run lead. Wingate cut the lead back to four in the sixth when Billings led off the frame with a triple, then scored on Turgeon's RBI single.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the final frame. Two walks and a single loaded the bases, while a Billings sacrifice fly made it 10-7. Turgeon followed with an RBI single to get Wingate within two, but a strikeout ended the game.

Kyle McClintock got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore left-hander Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed five runs on seven hits in one inning, striking out two and walking two.

Wingate is back in action Sunday, hosting a doubleheader against Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
