Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, picking up a pair of victories over visiting Slippery Rock University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won by scores of 13-4 and 10-3 to improve to 5-4 overall. Slippery Rock falls to 1-3 on the season.
Game One: Wingate 13, Slippery Rock 4Freshman outfielder
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) was two-for-three with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Classmate
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added an RBI and three runs scored, while
Patrick Watson (Tifton, Ga.) and
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) each contributed an RBI and run scored for the Bulldogs.
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added an RBI and run scored, while
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) each scored a pair of runs.
Alex Bell had a homer and two RBI to lead the Slippery Rock attack.
Ty Zimmerman added an RBI, while
Mitchell Wood was two-for-three with two runs scored.
Slippery Rock took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Bell connected on a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left.
Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, while Turgeon's sacrifice fly got the 'Dogs on the board. An error on the play allowed a second run to score.
Slippery Rock regained the lead in the third when Wood scored on an RBI groundout from Zimmerman. Barnette scored on Branton's RBI single in the bottom of the frame to make it 3-3.
The Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the fourth. A Daniel single and Billings double put runners on second and third to start the inning, while an error allowed both runs to score. Turgeon drove home the third run of the frame, while a wild pitch made it 7-3. Watson followed with an RBI double, then scored on an error. An RBI single from
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) capped the scoring in the inning, giving the Bulldogs a 10-3 lead.
Wood led off the Slippery Rock fifth with a double, then scored on an error to make it 10-4.
Little led off the bottom of the inning with a single, then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. A Barnette sacrifice fly plated Little, while Turgeon followed with a double, then scored on an error to make it 12-4. Daniel walked with one out in the sixth, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an error, making the final margin 13-4.
Junior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0. He allowed three earned runs on four hits in five innings, striking out five and walking three.
Stephen McKee took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed six runs on five hits in three innings, striking out one and walking five.
Game Two: Wingate 10, Slippery Rock 3Senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Barnette added two RBI and a run scored, while Turgeon was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. Branton and Little each added an RBI and a run scored, while
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) was two-for-four with an RBI.
Christian Porterfield went two-for-four with two RBI to lead the Slippery Rock attack.
Joe Campagna added a homer for the Rock, while Zimmerman and
Preston Falascino each went two-for-four with a run scored.
Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Porterfield's RBI single. Barnette answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame to tie it.
The Bulldogs piled up seven runs in the second inning. A
Logan Pingley double and Connell single started the inning, while Branton's RBI single plated the first run. Little followed with an RBI single, while a two-run single from Krebs made it 5-1. Krebs and Little both scored on an error, while Turgeon's RBI double put the 'Dogs on top by seven.
Krebs led off the fourth with a single, stole second, then went to third on a wild pitch. He would then score on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.
Slippery Rock got back within seven in the sixth when Campagna connected on a solo homer to left. Wingate responded in the bottom of the frame, when Turgeon scored on an RBI triple from Connell. Porterfield's RBI single in the top of the seventh made the final margin 10-3.
Sophomore right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out a career-high eight. Falascino took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in two innings, striking out one and walking two.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to USC Aiken for a 4 p.m. start. Â
