Aiken, S.C.----The eighth-ranked USC Aiken Pacers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon, rallying for a 5-4 victory over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action. The Pacers improve to 7-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-5 on the season.
Chaz Pal was four-for-four with a double, homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the USC Aiken attack.
Brian Parreira and
Zach Moon each drove in a run for the Pacers.
Freshman catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) had a homer to lead the Wingate attack. Classmate
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) added three hits and a run scored, while junior Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and freshman
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) each had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
USC Aiken got on the board in the third. Pal started the scoring with an RBI single, while a Parreira RBI single and Moon sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
Wingate got on the board in the top of the fifth. Freshman
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) led off the frame with a double, then went to third on a single from Daniel. Billings followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.
Wingate scored three times in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Llewellyn got it started by connecting on his first career homer, a solo shot to get the 'Dogs within one. Daniel followed with a single, then moved to third on another double from Billings. Little drove home Daniel, while Billings scored on a sacrifice fly from
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) to put Wingate on top 4-3.
The Pacers answered in the bottom of the frame when Pal connected on a two-out, two-run homer to make it 5-4.
Joe Marlow got the win for USC Aiken, moving to 2-0. He tossed 1 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one.
Nick Jobst got the save, striking out two in a scoreless ninth, giving up a hit. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Dorsey (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed a run on a hit in 1 2/3 innings, striking out one.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Concord at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
