Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs knocked down a season-high 14 threes Saturday afternoon en route to an 81-57 victory over the visiting Brevard College Tornados in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 17-7 overall and 13-5 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 4-20 overall and 3-15 in the conference.
Junior forward
Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 18 points and seven rebounds, hitting six-of-eight shots from three-point range. Junior guard
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) and sophomore guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 11 points apiece, combining to hit six-of-eight shots from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) had nine points, three assists, three steals and two blocks, while senior
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) contributed seven points, four assists and three steals.
Demarcus Threatt had 19 points to lead the Brevard attack.
Omar El Diraoui added 10 points, while
Stevie Williams contributed eight points.
Evan Dunham and
Alex Moe registered seven points apiece for the Tornados.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-2 lead six minutes in. Griffin had seven points in the flurry, while
Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) added four points. A
Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) layup made it 20-4 at the 13:11 mark. A pair of Dunham free throws trimmed the lead to 13, but a Lolar triple and Cureton dunk pushed the lead to 21.
The Tornados got back within 16 when a Threatt layup made it 37-21. Lolar answered with another three, but free throws from Threatt and
D.J. Bostick trimmed the lead back to 16. A Christian layup and Dominguez three gave the 'Dogs a 45-27 at halftime.
A three-point play from Williams got Brevard within 13 early in the second half. Cureton and Dominguez knocked down triples to push the lead back to 19 with 13:51 to go. The Bulldogs added a 14-3 run to take a 27-point lead. Dominguez and Doyle started the spurt with back-to-back threes, while a Lolar three and
Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) layup made it 67-40. A Dominguez triple and two Lolar free throws extended the lead to 31 with 5:42 remaining. Brevard got no closer than 24 the rest of the way.
Wingate shot 45.5 percent from the field, hitting 14-of-30 shots from three-point range (46.7 percent). The Tornados shot 36 percent from the field, hitting five-of-16 shots from three-point range (31.3 percent). The 'Dogs held a 42-35 rebounding advantage, while converting 16 Brevard turnovers into 25 points. The Wingate bench outscored the BC bench 44-17, while the Bulldogs collected 18 assists, the second-highest total of the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Coker for an 8 p.m. start. Wingate's final road game of the regular season is next Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman at 4 p.m. The 'Dogs close out the regular season with home games against Catawba and Anderson.
