Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University juniors
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) and
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) combined to score 41 points Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to an 80-69 victory over visiting Anderson University on the final day of the regular season in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 20-8 overall and 16-6 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 7-21 overall and 5-17 in the conference. The Bulldogs reach 20 wins in the regular season for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Cureton also piled up 13 rebounds on the day, going five-of-10 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Doyle knocked down six-of-seven shots from three-point range, adding two assists and two steals. Freshman
Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) contributed 13 points and nine boards, while
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists on his Senior Day.
Randall Shaw had 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Anderson attack, hitting four-of-seven shots from three-point range.
Rakish Taylor added 13 points and nine boards, while
Lex Davis had nine points and three rebounds.
Maurice Howard and
Tre Fields chipped in with eight points apiece.
Wingate jumped out to a 19-8 lead seven minutes into the contest. Doyle knocked down three triples in the spurt, scoring nine points while Baez added five points. A Fields triple got Anderson back within eight, but a Doyle triple and Cureton layup made it 24-12 at the midway points of the first half.
A
Maurice Howard three and
Rakish Taylor dunk made it 33-27 with 3:35 to go. Two Doyle free throws and a
Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) layup put the lead back to double figures, while a
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) bucket made it 39-27 with a minute remaining. Three free throws from Fields got the Trojans within nine at halftime.
Wingate opened the second half on a 13-4 run to go on top by 18.
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) scored the first four points, while Cureton and Baez contributed four points apiece in the spurt. A Howard three cut the lead to 12, but a Baez jumper and Doyle three made it 59-42 with 12:51 to go. A three from
Tony Dargan got Anderson within 11 at the 8:14 mark, but a Xavier Griffin layup made it 69-54 with 7:24 to go.
Shaw knocked down a pair of threes to get Anderson within six at the 3:30 mark. Cureton answered with a three, while a Doyle triple made it 77-65 with 2:28 remaining. Anderson would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Wingate shot 48.1 percent from the field, hitting eight-of-17 shots from three-point range (47.1 percent). Anderson shot 42.9 percent from the field, knocking down eight-of-19 shots from beyond the arc (42.1 percent). The Bulldogs held a 36-31 rebounding advantage, converting 14 Anderson turnovers into 15 points.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Carson-Newman in the opening round of the SAC Tournament. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. The Bulldogs are the three seed in the tournament, while the Eagles are the six seed. Wingate went 2-0 against Carson-Newman in the regular season.
