Mars Hill, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs erased a late three run deficit in game two of Sunday's doubleheader en route to a 12-9 victory in eight innings of a scheduled seven inning game at Mars Hill University. The Lions held off a Wingate rally in game one to collect a 10-8 victory. The Bulldogs move to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while Mars Hill is 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Game One: Mars Hill 10, Wingate 8Evan Rogers had three homers and six RBI to lead the MHU attack, as the Lions jumped out to a 10-3 lead before a five-run Wingate seventh made it interesting.
Dalton Eisenbath added an RBI and two runs scored, while
Ray Carolina contributed an RBI and run scored in game one.
Senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and freshman outfielder
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) each had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while junior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) had a homer and two runs scored. Turgeon also homered, while freshman
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) added an RBI and run scored.
Mars Hill scored seven times in the first three innings to take a 7-0 lead. Rogers two-run homer in the first got it started, while his three-run shot in the second made it 5-0. A Carolina RBI groundout and Eisenbath sacrifice fly put the Lions on top by seven.
Barnette and Turgeon got Wingate on the board in the fourth, hitting back-to-back solo homers to make it 7-2. It was the first long ball of the season for both Barnette and Turgeon.
Rogers pushed the MHU lead back to six with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Billings scored on a Krebs RBI single in the fifth to make it 8-3, but a Wingate error in the bottom of the sixth allowed two Mars Hill runs to score, making it 10-3.
The Bulldogs made it interesting in the final frame. Billings and
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) started the inning with singles, while a Krebs sacrifice fly plated the first run. Singles from Barnette and Turgeon were followed by Connell's RBI single, while a
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) RBI single made it 10-6. An RBI single from
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) got the Bulldogs within three, while a Billings RBI single made it 10-8. Mars Hill got out of the jam when a groundout ended the game.
Tom Mastrodonato got the win, moving to 3-0. He allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Junior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits in three innings, striking out three and walking two.
Game Two: Wingate 12, Mars Hill 9 (8 innings)Krebs had a homer and five RBI to lead the Bulldogs in game two. Billings had two hits, an RBI and four runs scored, while Little had a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Barnette added a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs in game two.
Logan Conley had three hits including a homer to lead the Mars Hill attack, driving in two runs and scoring three. Eisenbath had a double and three RBI, while Carolina drove in two runs and scored a run. Hunter Merill added an RBI and run scored for the Lions.
Conley led off the second with a solo homer, while Eisenbath's RBI groundout made it 2-0.
Wingate scored four times in the third to take the lead. The first run scored on an error, while an RBI single from Little tied it. Barnette connected on his second homer of the day later in the frame, a two-run shot to make it 4-2.
Mars Hill answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Conley started things with an RBI single, while a Carolina two-run single put the Lions on top. Eisenbath added a two-run double to make it 7-4.
Wingate scored twice in the fifth to get within a run. Billings led off the frame with a double, then scored on Little's RBI double. Krebs followed with an RBI single to make it 7-6.
Merrill's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave Mars Hill an 8-6 advantage.
Billings drew a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, then scored on a two-out RBI double from Krebs. An error on the following play would allow Krebs to score the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.
Senior
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) led off the eighth with a single. It was a Billings RBI single that gave the 'Dogs a 9-8 advantage. After a walk, Krebs connected on his third homer of the year, a three-run shot to center to make it 12-8. Mars Hill scored one in the ninth to make the final margin 12-9.
Senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) got the win, moving to 2-0. He allowed a run on five hits in four innings of work, striking out four.
Patrick Riehl took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed five runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Winston-Salem State for a 6 p.m. start.
