Winston-Salem, N.C.----Five different Wingate University pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout Tuesday night as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-0 victory at Winston-Salem State University in NCAA Division II baseball action at BB&T Park. Wingate moves to 10-7 overall, while the Rams fall to 6-10 on the season.
Senior
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) had a double and an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Junior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) and sophomore
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) each scored a run for the Bulldogs.
Nobody scored until the sixth, when Wingate plated a pair of runs. Barnette drew a one-out walk, then scored when Brown reached on an error. Simmons followed with a double down the left field line, plating Brown to make it 2-0.
That would be enough for the Wingate pitching staff. Freshman right-hander
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the start, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just three hits to move to 1-0 on the year.
Redshirt freshman right-hander
Danny Dunning (Mint Hill, N.C.), sophomore right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) and senior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) each contributed an inning of hitless relief for the Bulldogs. In addition to allowing just five singles on the night, the Wingate pitchers did not walk a batter.
Junior right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) shut out the Rams in the ninth, earning his first save of the year while collecting a strikeout.
Jordan Cummings took the loss for WSSU, falling to 0-1. He allowed two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, opening a three-game series against Bloomsburg with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
