Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept a doubleheader over visiting Bloomsburg University in NCAA Division II baseball Saturday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the first game 12-8, while prevailing 6-1 in game two to move to 12-7 overall. The Huskies fall to 6-4 on the season.
Game One: Wingate 12, Bloomsburg 8Sophomore designated hitter
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was three-for-five with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense, while junior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore infielder
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) had three hits and three runs scored, while senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) also had three hits, driving in a run and scoring twice. Freshman
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) had two hits and an RBI, while classmate
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added an RBI and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.
Ryan Kirman had two homers and three RBI to lead the Bloomsburg attack.
Joey Casselberry added two hits and two RBI for the Huskies, while
Austin Edgette had two hits and three runs scored.
Bloomsburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Casselberry drove home the first run with an RBI single, while a Wingate error allowed two more runs to score. Kirman's solo homer to center gave the Huskies a 4-0 lead in the third.
The Bulldogs answered with 11 straight runs, starting with a five-run third. Little drove home the first run, while a pair of Bloomsburg errors allowed three more runs to score. Brown added an RBI single to give Wingate a 5-4 lead.
The 'Dogs plated two more runs in the fourth. Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) drove home Branton with an RBI single, while an RBI single from Krebs made it 7-4. Brown led off the fifth with a solo shot to left, while a Daniels RBI single later in the frame made it 9-4.
Krebs started the sixth with a double, then scored on Barnett's RBI single. An RBI single from
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) put the Bulldogs on top by seven.
Bloomsburg scored twice in the seventh, making it 11-6 on Kirman's second homer of the day. Little reached on a one-out single in the seventh, then scored on a Barnette sacrifice fly to push the Wingate lead back to six.
Casselberry's RBI single in the eighth, along with a Kirman sacrifice fly made the final margin 12-8.
Senior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-1. He allowed two earned runs on six hits in five innings, striking out six and walking two.
Zach Meyer took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed eight runs on eight hits in three innings, striking out four and walking two.
Game Two: Wingate 6, Bloomsburg 1Little went three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Billings was two-for-three with an RBI and run scored, while Daniel added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Barnette also drove in a run for the Bulldogs in game two.
Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Little got it started with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Barnette's RBI single.
The Bulldogs plated four runs in the second to take a five-run lead. After the first two hitters were retired, a single and error put runners on second and third. Daniel drove home the first run with an RBI single, while a Billings RBI single made it 3-0. A double steal pushed the lead to four, while Little's RBI single made it 5-0.
Edgette scored on a Casselberry sacrifice fly in the fourth to get the Huskies within four.
Wingate stretched the lead back to five in the bottom of the fourth. Daniel got it started with a single, then scored on an RBI single from Little to make it 6-1.
That would be plenty for sophomore left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.), who tossed a complete game to move to 2-2 on the year. He allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking just one, throwing 89 pitches in the seven-inning complete game.
Ryuta Amaike took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.
The Bulldogs and Huskies are back in action Sunday, wrapping up a three-game series at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
