Wingate goes 1-1 Saturday with victory over #7 Florida Tech

Valdosta, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs went 1-1 Saturday in NCAA Division II baseball action, opening the day with a 7-4 loss against Valdosta State while capping the day with a 4-3 win over seventh-ranked Florida Tech in 10 innings. The Bulldogs move to 1-2 on the season.

Valdosta State 7, Wingate 4

Marcus Sigmon had a double, five RBI and two runs scored to lead the VSU offense. Tyler York and Ryan Smith each added an RBI for the Blazers.

Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.), Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) and Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) each had an RBI and a run scored for Wingate, while Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) also drove in a run.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Little got it started with an RBI single, while Barnette followed with an RBI double. Krebs added an RBI single, while a Branton sacrifice fly made it 4-0.

Valdosta State answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sigmon got it started with a two-run single, while York's RBI single made it 4-3.

The Blazers scored four times in the sixth to take the lead for good. Sigmon provided the big blow in the frame, a three-run double to make it 6-4. Smith's sacrifice fly gave VSU a three-run lead.

Mitchell Cody got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven. Senior left-hander Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings, striking out four and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 4, #7 Florida Tech 3 (10 innings)

Little drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wingate offense, while Branton added an RBI and a run scored. Freshman David Nash (Monroe, N.C.) also had an RBI for the Bulldogs, while classmate Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) scored twice.

John Sprowls was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Florida Tech offense. John Sternagel and Reid Neal each drove in a run for the Panthers.

Florida Tech got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from Sprowls.

That would be all of the scoring until the top of the eighth. Turgeon reached on an error, then stole second. He would score on Branton's RBI single to make it 1-1.

The Panthers looked to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. Senior right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) came out of the bullpen and notched a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam, sending the game to extra innings.

A catcher's interference and walk put runners on first and second with one out for the Bulldogs in the top of the 10th. Nash put Wingate on top with an RBI single to left center. Little added a two-run single up the middle, making it 4-1.

Florida Tech scored twice in the bottom of the frame, getting a Sternagel RBI single and Neal sacrifice fly to make the final margin 4-3.

Brown got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, striking out two to move to 1-0. Sophomore left-hander Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits. Andrew Marzheuser took the loss, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three to fall to 0-1.

Wingate is back in action Sunday, facing Valdosta State at 1 p.m.
