#5 Lincoln Memorial rides hot shooting to 107-74 victory over Bulldogs

Wingate, N.C.----The fifth-ranked Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters knocked down 18-of-29 shots from three-point range Saturday afternoon en route to a 107-74 victory at Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. LMU improves to 20-2 overall and 16-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-6 overall and 11-4 in the conference.

Jalen Steele had 32 points to lead the Railsplitters, hitting nine-of-12 shots from three-point range. Gerel Simmons added 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, while Luquon Choice had 18 points on five-of-eight shooting from beyond the arc.

Freshman Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) had 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, hitting four-of-seven shots from three-point range. Sophomore Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) added 14 points, while junior Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Senior Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 10 points, two assists and two steals.

A Steele triple gave LMU a five-point lead seven minutes into the opening half, but Lolar answered with a triple to make it 18-16. The Railsplitters responded with a 30-10 run, taking a 22-point lead at the 3:57 mark. Steele had nine points in the flurry, while Simmons contributed eight points. A Simmons jumper at the 2:29 mark made it 51-28, but a three from Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) trimmed the halftime deficit to 20.

A three and a jumper from Griffin got the 'Dogs within 17 early in the second half. Triples from Choice and Steele stretched the lead to 26 at the 12:40 mark, while threes from Simmons and Steele made it 92-55 with seven minutes left. Wingate would get no closer than 30 the rest of the way.

LMU shot 54.3 percent from the field, while knocking down 18-of-29 from three-point range (62.1 percent). Wingate shot 37.1 percent from the field, while connecting on nine-of-22 shots from beyond the arc (40.9 percent). The Railsplitters held a 46-27 rebounding advantage and a 16-3 edge in second-chance points. Lincoln Memorial outscored the Bulldogs 36-20 in the post.

Wingate is back in action Monday, hosting Mars Hill at 8 p.m.
