Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) had a triple, homer and four RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over visiting Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 17-9 overall and 3-4 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 15-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Krebs was three-for-four on the night, scoring a run while adding four RBI. Junior
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) also had three hits, scoring two runs while driving in one, adding two stolen bases.
Jimmy Rice had a homer and two RBI to lead the Carson-Newman attack.
Ryan Addington added two hits and a run scored for the Eagles.
Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Billings led off the frame with a double to right center. Krebs followed with his team-best eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right center to put the Bulldogs on top.
The Eagles tied it with two runs in the third. Addington led off the inning with an infield hit, while a two-run homer from Rice made it 2-2.
Wingate regained the lead in the fifth. Freshman
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) was hit by a pitch with one out, then moved to second on a groundout. He would score on a Krebs RBI single, making it 3-2.
The Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the seventh. Freshman
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) started the inning with a single. Pinch-runner
Matthew Grecco (Norfolk, Va.) moved to second on a sacrifice from Daniel, then scored on a Billings RBI single. Krebs followed with an RBI triple down the right field line, making it 5-2.
Senior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) worked seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high nine without walking a batter to move to 4-2. He struck out two in the first and two more in the second, while adding a strikeout in the third and fourth inning before working a 1-2-3 fifth. After allowing two singles to start the sixth, he got a strikeout and double play to get out of the jam. Newsome added two more strikeouts in his final inning of work.
Senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) worked a perfect ninth, striking out two to notch his second save of the year. Junior right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) worked a scoreless inning in the eighth without allowing a hit, working around an error and hit batsman by inducing an inning-ending double play.
Vince Apicella took the loss, falling to 4-2. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one.
