Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a 5-1 victory over visiting Carson-Newman University in game one of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field to clinch the series win. The Eagles prevailed 10-5 in the finale on Saturday. Wingate moves to 18-10 overall and 4-5 in the SAC, while C-N is 16-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 5, Carson-Newman 1Sophomore left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) tossed seven strong innings to lead the Bulldogs to a game one victory. Freshman infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) drove in two runs and scored a run, while sophomore
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) added an RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) had a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs, while redshirt freshman catcher
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) also drove in a run.
Wingate got on the board in the second. Senior
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) lined a one-out double to center. He would score when Goodwin reached on an error to make it 1-0.
Carson-Newman tied it in the fifth.
Ian Pung led off the inning with a bunt single, then scored on
Ryan Addington's RBI single to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. A
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) single and
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) walk put two on for Brown, who ripped an RBI double to right to make it 2-1. Little followed with a two-run single to left center, while Turgeon's RBI single made it 5-1.
That would be plenty for Behenna, who moved to 3-3 on the year. He allowed a run on just six hits in his seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Junior left-hander
Alon Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed a scoreless eighth, while senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) worked a perfect ninth to finish it.
Dustin Batson took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking five to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 10, Wingate 5Paul Kirby was two-for-three with three RBI to lead the Carson-Newman attack in game two.
Cade Snapp and
Greg Jones each added two RBI and a run scored, while
Brandon Roberts contributed three hits, an RBI and three runs scored.
Krebs went three-for-four with a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Billings added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while freshman
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) was two-for-three with a run scored.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, getting a Kirby sacrifice fly and Snapp RBI double. Carson-Newman scored six times in the third to go on top by eight. Roberts started it with an RBI double, while Kirby's RBI single made it 4-0. An error allowed another run to score, while a two-run double from Jones put the Eagles on top by seven. Campbell's RBI single capped the scoring in the frame.
Wingate got on the board in the bottom of the third. Daniel got things started with a one-out double, then scored on a Billings RBI double. Krebs followed with an RBI double to make it 8-2.
Carson-Newman scored two more runs in the fourth to push the lead back to eight. Kirby's RBI groundout plated the first run, while a Snapp sacrifice fly made it 10-2.
Wingate cut the lead to five in the final frame. A pair of singles put two on base for Krebs, who connected on his team-best ninth homer of the year, a three-run shot to make it 10-5.
Ryan Eberle got the win, moving to 4-2. He allowed five runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Junior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-2. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Mount Olive at 4 p.m.
