Newberry picks up 7-0 victory over Wingate in series opener

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves opened a three-game league series with a 7-0 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night. The Wolves improve to 22-9-1 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 19-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

Daymon Totherow had two triples, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Newberry offense. Danton Hyman went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored, while Michael Gonzalez added a pair of RBI for the Wolves. Jacob Bass contributed two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Trejon Smith had an RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a pair of hits to lead the Wingate offense. Freshmen Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) and Matthew Grecco (Norfolk, Va.) each added a hit for the Bulldogs.

Newberry jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Gonzalez. The Wolves scored three more runs in the third to push the lead to four. Totherow got it started with an RBI triple, then scored on an RBI single from Bass. Another Gonzalez sacrifice fly made it 4-0.

An RBI single from Hyman in the fourth put Newberry on top by five. Derek Olenchuk added an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-0. Totherow's second RBI triple in the eighth put the Wolves on top by seven.

Daniel Nations got the win for Newberry, tossing a complete game four-hit shutout. He struck out three and walked two to improve to 5-0 on the year. Senior left-hander Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-3. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one.

The Bulldogs and Wolves are back in action Saturday, playing a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
