Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Sullivan’s five goals help Wingate to 13-11 SAC road victory over Coker

Hartsville, S.C.--- Wingate University sophomore attack Jeremy Sullivan (Crofton, Md.) netted a team- best five goals and freshman attack Ryan Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) totaled three goals along with one assist as the Bulldogs earned their sixth victory in their last seven games in a 13-11 South Atlantic Conference road triumph at Coker College Saturday. Wingate improves to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Coker falls to 2-7 and 1-2 in the SAC.

"Our attack played well tonight," Wingate assistant coach Matt Schunk says. "When we moved junior defenseman Drew Thompson (Charlotte, N.C.) to face-off, we were able to experience success on the offensive end."

Thompson won five face-offs Saturday and scored the game-winning goal as well. "For most of the second quarter, we played defense," Schunk says. "We made some adjustments at halftime…and we were able to build a lead in the third quarter. Our midfield gave us good balance on offense. Jeremy Sullivan played well tonight."

The Bulldogs opened up the contest on a run of three unanswered goals to give WU a quick 3-0 advantage with 11:31 remaining in the first quarter. The second score was netted by freshman midfielder Daniel Godwin (Greensboro, N.C.), giving him a team-high 18 goals on the season.

Coker would end the Wingate consecutive goal streak to make it a 3-1 contest with 9:25 to go in the first quarter on a tally from senior attack Mike Marticello (Westbury, N.Y.). On the evening, Marticello would share the Cobra team lead with three scores. The 'Dogs would answer with three more consecutive goals to gain a 6-1 advantage with 1:32 to go in the first quarter of play.

The Cobras would fight back and commence a run of five unanswered tallies to tie the contest up at 6-6 with 6:49 to play in the second quarter. The fifth and sixth goals were netted by senior attack Shane Wilson (Westbury, N.Y.) who also totaled three tallies in the contest.

WU regained the lead at 7-6 with 5:39 in the second quarter on a score from freshman attack Kenan Reed (Winston Salem, N.C.) Coker then tied the game up again at 7-7 on an unassisted tally from sophomore midfielder Brooks Long (West Laurel, N.J.). The Bulldogs quickly took back the lead to gain an 8-7 advantage with 4:19 to go in the first half of play. The 'Dogs would maintain the 8-7 edge going into the halftime intermission.

Coker began the second half of play with another goal from Wilson to tie the contest up for a third time at 8-8 with 13:49 left in the third quarter. Wingate recaptured the lead on a score from Thompson to give the Bulldogs a 9-8 lead with 12:15 in the third quarter, an advantage they would not relinquish.

The goal from Thompson would begin a streak of three straight tallies to give WU an 11-8 lead with 13:20 to play in the third quarter of play. The Cobras decreased the margin to one goal on back-to-back goals to make it an 11-10 contest with 10:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs would add consecutive insurance goals to extend their lead to 13-10 and pull away with 7:20 remaining in the game on Sullivan's fourth and fifth scores of the contest. Junior midfielder Seth Grimwood (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman attack Alex Llerandi (Marietta, Ga.) also contributed one goal each for Wingate.

Wingate junior goalkeeper Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) returned to the cage tonight for the Bulldogs after missing the previous two games. He added another double-digit save performance to his junior year resume, posting 13 saves on the evening. The two-time SAC Defensive Player of the Week played for a total of 59:57 Saturday and picked up the win. Coker junior goalie Adam Messel (Spartanburg, S.C.) recorded six saves and took the loss. He played for a total of 46:40. Messel was later replaced by junior goalkeeper Anthony Malik (Knoxville, Md.), who played for the final 13:20 of the contest and posted one save.

"Jacob Ormerod made some huge saves for us tonight," Schunk says. "When we were up 13-10, he made two consecutive man-down saves to help us kill a penalty. He made a six-on-four save and a six-on-five save. This was a big boost for our man-down defense."

The Wingate University men's lacrosse team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 30 when they return home to the Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex to take on the number 13 Queens University of Charlotte Royals. First face-off is slated for 7 p.m. The Coker College Cobras will also be in action on March 30 for a 7 p.m. home SAC contest against the Catawba College Indians.
