Bulldogs and Royals split doubleheader

Charlotte, N.C.----The Queens University Royals rallied for a 2-1 victory over visiting Wingate University in game one of Wednesday's South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader, while the Bulldogs rolled to an 11-1 victory in game two. The Bulldogs move to 18-10 overall and 3-5 in the SAC, while the Royals are 16-17 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

Game One: Queens 2, Wingate 1

Ashton Whitaker and Miranda Cummings each drove in a run in game one for the Royals. Taylor Rosenbalm went two-for-three with a run scored, while Samantha Martinez was one-for-one with a run scored.

Freshman outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) was one-for-two with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) had a double and a run scored, while junior infielder Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) went two-for-two.

Wingate got on the board in the second. Wilson led off the frame with a double, then went to third on McLaurin's single. Sapp's RBI single plated Wilson to make it 1-0.

Queens tied the game with a run in the third. Rosenbalm got it started with a one-out single, then scored on Whitaker's RBI single to make it 1-1.

The Royals took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. A walk, single and groundout put runners on second and third, while an infield single loaded the bases. Cummings drew a bases-loaded walk to give Queens a 2-1 lead.

Evie Scott got the win in relief, moving to 6-4. She tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit, striking out two. Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 10-8. She allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, striking out five and walking three.

Game Two: Wingate 11, Queens 1 (5 innings)

Junior infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had a homer and five RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outfielder Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) was three-for-four with two RBI and three runs scored, while senior infielder Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) added three hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Wilson also drove in a run for the Bulldogs in game two.

Wingate jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Singles from Helms, Hendrix and senior Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) loaded the bases for Doran. The junior connected on her fifth homer of the year, a grand slam to center to put the 'Dogs on top by four.

Wingate scored three more in the second to push the lead to seven. A single and walk put the first two on base, while Hendrix drove home the first run. A Queens error and wild pitch allowed two more runs to score, making it 7-0.

Queens got on the board in the third, but Doran's RBI double and Wilson's RBI single in the top of the fourth made it 9-1.

Sapp reached on a one-out single in the fifth, then scored on an RBI triple from Helms. A Hendrix RBI single plated Helms to make it 11-1.
