Bulldogs sweep SAC doubleheader at Brevard

Brevard, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got a pair of solid pitching performances Saturday afternoon en route to a doubleheader sweep at Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the first game 3-1, while prevailing 2-1 in game two to improve to 20-10 overall and 5-5 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 11-27 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

Game One: Wingate 3, Brevard 1

Senior infielder Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) had a triple and a homer to lead the Wingate offense, while senior catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) also homered for the Bulldogs. Freshman outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added a triple and an RBI, while junior infielder Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) was one-for-two with a run scored.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Helms deposited the first pitch of the game over the fence in left, her sixth homer of the year.

Wingate added to its lead in the fourth when McLaurin reached on a two-out wild pitch on strike three, then scored on Sapp's RBI triple to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh when Laskey connected on her sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to left.

Brevard got on the board with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Mary Cloninger connected on a solo shot to left, making the final margin 3-1.

Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 11-8. She allowed a run on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out six without walking a batter to notch her 80th career victory. Jamie Hrobak took the loss, falling to 8-17. She allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 2, Brevard 1

Junior infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had two doubles and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Sophomore outfielder Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) had two hits and two runs scored, stealing three bases while senior infielder Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Hendrix reached on a one-out single, then stole second and scored on Doran's RBI double to center.

Hendrix reached on a wild pitch on strike three in the third inning, then stole second and scored on Doran's RBI double to left to make it 2-0.

Brevard got within a run in the bottom of the fourth when Kinsey Parrish scored on Ricki Kuhn's RBI single, making it 2-1.

Freshman right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) made that lead stick. She allowed a run on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out four and walking one to move to 9-2 on the year. Hrobak took the loss, falling to 8-18. She allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Coker at 2 p.m.
