Undefeated Wheeling Jesuit claims 18-10 road victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----Wheeling Jesuit University junior attack Elizabeth Hales (Orlando, Fla.) led the offensive attack with six goals and five assists to lift the Cardinals past Wingate University 18-10 on Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex Sunday. The Cards boost their undefeated record to 4-0 overall. Wingate falls to 3-2 overall.
 
WU junior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) led all Bulldog scorers, netting five total goals on the afternoon. Junior midfielder Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) finished second in scoring with three tallies. Wheeling Jesuit senior attack Jessie Tufnell (Flower Mound, Texas) added four goals and four assists to finish behind Hales on the WJU offensive charts.
 
The Cards jumped out to the early 2-0 lead with 26:09 in the first half on consecutive tallies from Tufnell and Hales. WJU had a 3-1 advantage until the Bulldogs tied the game up at 3-3 on back-to-back goals from Andrews with 18:36 remaining in the first half of play. Jesuit regained the lead on a score from sophomore attack Kori Hickman (Cincinnati, Ohio) to give the Cardinals a 4-3 advantage, which would end up being the game-winner score.
 
Wheeling Jesuit maintained a 5-4 lead with 9:15 to go in the first half until the Cardinals netted four consecutive goals to increase the margin to a 9-4 advantage at the 5:42 mark in the first. WJU had a 10-5 lead going into the halftime break.
 
The Cardinals began the second half of play with back-to-back tallies from Hales and junior midfielder Mary Burns (New Stanton, Pa.). Wingate never got within a deficit of five goals in the second half and Wheeling Jesuit would go on to win by a final score of 18-10.
 
WU freshman goalkeeper Arion Pierre (Battlefield, Va.) recorded eight total saves in the contest. She would play for a total time of 49:37 on Sunday. Pierre was replaced by sophomore goalie Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) who made her first appearance of 2016 and played a total of 10:23. Wheeling Jesuit junior goalkeeper Maire Austin (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded seven saves and picked up the win.
 
The Bulldogs open South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University for a 12 noon match-up. Wingate hits the road again Wednesday, March 16, visiting Lees-McRae College for a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt. The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals will return home on Friday, March 11, when they face the Tiffin University Dragons at 5 p.m.
