Tusculum edges Wingate in 1-0 pitchers’ duel Friday night

Greeneville, Tenn.----Tusculum senior left-hander Placido Torres tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout Friday night, striking out 15 to lead the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Tusculum improves to 25-8 overall and 9-4 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 19-16 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

Nick Lacina was one-for-two with an RBI to lead the Tusculum attack. Kevin Victoriano added two hits and a run scored for the Pioneers.

Junior outfielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had the lone hit for the Bulldogs. Senior left-hander Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) tossed 7 2/3 strong innings, allowing a run on six hits.

A single, walk and hit batsman loaded the bases for Tusculum in the second, but Newsome got out of the jam by inducing an inning-ending groundout.

Billings led off the fourth with a single, then stole second and went to third on an error. Torres kept the 'Dogs off the board with a strikeout and flyout to get out of the inning.

Victoriano led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Lacina.

The Bulldogs had a runner on second with one out in the fifth, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

Torres moves to 7-0 on the season. The league-leader in wins, ERA and strikeouts lowered his ERA to 0.45 while collecting double-digit strikeouts for the eighth time this season. Newsome took the tough loss, falling to 4-4 on the year. He allowed a run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work, striking out five and walking just one.

The two teams are back in action Saturday, wrapping up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
