Andrews leads the Bulldogs to third straight victory, a 17-8 decision over North Greenville

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) scored a career-tying seven goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 17-8 non-conference triumph over North Greenville University in women's lacrosse action on Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex Wednesday night.
 
Freshman attack Anna Harbacevich (Charlotte, N.C.) scored added a career-best four goals for the victors. Wingate improves to 10-4 overall, giving the Bulldogsa program-best victories for a season. North Greenville is now 8-6 overall.
 
The Bulldogs struck first in the contest on a score from Harbacevich to take an early 1-0 lead at the 27:23 mark in the first half. The Crusaders answered quickly with back-to-back goals to make it a 2-1 contest with 22:24 to go in the first half of play. Wingate followed the consecutive NGU scores with a run of four unanswered goals to gain a 5-2 advantage with 17:56 to play in the first. The game-winning tally was netted by Andrews at the 20:20 mark to break the tie and give the 'Dogs a 3-2 advantage.
 
The Crusaders ended the WU consecutive goal streak on back-to-back scores to cut the deficit down to one goal at 5-4 with 14:35 to go in the first half. The 'Dogs responded with two more consecutive insurance goals to take a 7-4 lead with 3:10 remaining in the half. Wingate would maintain the 7-4 advantage going into the halftime break.
 
The two Wingate tallies scored before the intermission would commence a run of nine straight goals for the Bulldogs, as the hosts gained a 14-4 advantage at the 10:25 mark in the second half. NGU ended the Wingate run with consecutive goals to cut the deficit down to 14-6. The Crusaders trimmed the margin to 15-8 with 1:08 remaining in the contest, but the 'Dogs would end the game with back-to-back tallies to take the 17-8 lead with 23 seconds left.
 
WU junior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) finished with two scores on the evening, adding to her season total at 48 goals. Andrews now has the team lead in goals scored. Her Wednesday night performance gives her 49 total scores in her junior campaign. Four Bulldogs finished with one goal each in the contest. Three Crusaders finished with two tallies each, led by freshman defense man Hanna Hawkins (Simpsonville, S.C.) who also added an assist.
 
Wingate freshman goalkeeper and reigning South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) posted six saves and picked up the win. She went the distance Wednesday. North Greenville freshman Sydney Taylor (Fountain Inn, S.C.) recorded 15 saves and took the loss. She also played the full 60 minutes.
 
The Wingate University women's lacrosse team visits Brevard Saturday. The Bulldogs are is back in action at home next Saturday, April 23 for Senior Day against SAC foe the Tusculum College Pioneers. First draw control is slated for 1 p.m. The North Greenville University Crusaders will be back in action at home this Saturday against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers for a 5 p.m. start.
