Wingate, N.C.---Wingate University senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday night as the Bulldogs picked up a 9-8 victory over visiting Winston-Salem State University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 22-16 overall, while the Rams fall to 16-17 on the year.
Krebs was two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) added two hits including a triple, driving in a run and scoring three times while freshman infielder
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) contributed three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) also had an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs, while senior
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) each drove in a run.
Phillip Page,
Ivan Acuna and
Emilio Abreau each drove in two runs to lead the WSSU attack.
Michael McNamara added an RBI for the Rams.
McNamara's RBI single in the top of the first gave WSSU a 1-0 lead, but an RBI single from Simmons and RBI groundout from Little gave the 'Dogs a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame.
The Rams scored four runs in the second, taking a 5-2 lead on two-run singles from Abreau and Acuna.
Wingate answered with two in the fourth to cut the lead to one. Billings drove home the first run with an RBI triple, then scored on a Krebs sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. An RBI double from Page in the fifth put the Rams back on top by two.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Turgeon started it with an RBI double, while Connell's RBI triple made it 6-6. An error allowed Connell to score the go-ahead run, while a Krebs RBI single made it 8-6.
Page's RBI single in the seventh got Winston-Salem State within one, while two Wingate errors and a wild pitch allowed the Rams to score the tying run in the eighth.
That was all of the scoring until the 11th. Redshirt freshman
Kemper Patton (Sumter, S.C.) led off the frame with a pinch-hit single, then moved to second on Connell's bunt single. After a pair of popouts, Krebs came to the plate with two on and two outs. The senior lined a 2-2 pitch into the right center field gap, plating pinch-runner
Tyler Napierala (Lebanon, Pa.) to give the 'Dogs the walk-off win.
Senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) got the win, moving to 5-1. He tossed two shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Devin McLemore took the loss, falling to 4-2. He allowed a run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series at home against Brevard at 6 p.m.
