Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the fourth inning Friday night, rolling to an 11-5 victory over visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate wins its fourth straight, moving to 23-16 overall and 7-9 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 12-29 overall and 3-16 in the conference.
Junior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) was four-for-five with four RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Senior first baseman
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) added a double, three RBI and a run scored, while senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) contributed two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had three hits and three runs scored, while freshman catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) added two RBI and a run scored.
Brevard took the lead in the top of the first when
Brennan Allen lined a one-out double to center, then scored on two errors on the play.
Wingate tied it in the bottom of the frame. Billings led off the inning with a single, went to second on a groundout, then scored on Barnette's RBI single.
The Bulldogs exploded for eight runs in the fourth to blow it open. Singles from
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.), Simmons and
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) loaded the bases with no outs. Llewellyn started the scoring with a two-run single, while Krebs followed with an RBI single. Barnette's two-run single to left made it 6-1. Simmons provided the big blow, with a two-out, bases-clearing three-run double down the right field line, giving the 'Dogs an eight-run lead.
The Tornados trimmed the lead to six in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on another Wingate error. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, getting a Krebs RBI double and Barnette RBI single to make it 11-3.
Pat Quinn's RBI single in the seventh got the Tornados within seven, while three walks and an error allowed another run to score in the eighth, making the final margin 11-5.
Senior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) got the win, moving to 5-4. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out nine and walking two. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Dorsey (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, while sophomore right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth, making his first appearance since mid-February.
Kyle Pittman took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed nine runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two.
The Bulldogs and Tornados are back in action Saturday, meeting for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
