Bulldogs score season-high 21 goals in 21-10 SAC road victory over Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----Wingate junior midfielder Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) totaled five goals on the afternoon to lead the Bulldogs to a 21-10 South Atlantic Conference road triumph over Newberry College in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. Andrews now has 42 goals in her junior campaign, 11 more than her total for the 2015 season. Wingate is now 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Newberry is now 5-8 and 1-5 in SAC play. The 'Dogs have now won six out of their last seven games.

"We got off to a slow start, but found our stride midway through the first half," Wingate head women's lacrosse coach Caline McHenry Olmsted says. "Emily Nosek did a good job of driving and seeing the middle, while Brittie Andrews did a great job of finishing her shots. Our defense settled down and tightened up on their offense. Arion Pierre came up with some big saves to help us keep our momentum into the second half."

The Bulldogs struck first on the 44th goal of the season for junior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) to take an early 1-0 lead with 29:39 in the first half. Dempsey finished with three scores in the contest and now has increased her season total to 46 goals. Newberry responded with back-to-back tallies to make it a 2-1 game with 26:59 left in the first half of play. The Wolves had a 5-3 advantage at the 20:36 mark in the first half until Wingate answered with three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 lead with 15:52 to go in the first. Newberry quickly took the lead back with a one-goal advantage at 7-6 with 13:59 remaining in the half.

WU responded with three more unanswered goals of its own to gain their largest lead of the contest at 9-7 at the 8:15 mark of the first half of play. The 'Dogs added on two more goals to maintain an 11-8 advantage going into the halftime break.

The Wolves netted the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit to two goals and make it an 11-9 contest with 28:33 to go in the second half. Wingate shortly commenced a run of six unanswered scores to blow the game open and take a 17-9 lead at 14:01 mark in the second half.

Newberry would end the WU consecutive goal streak to make it a 17-10 contest on a tally from sophomore midfielder Alexis Kahler (West Bloomfield, Mich.). The Bulldogs soon answered with four consecutive insurance goals to add on to their lead at 21-10 with 56 seconds remaining in the contest. The last two goals were netted by sophomore attack Jaclyn Chiesa (Canton, Ga.), who now has eight total goals in her sophomore season.

WU freshman attack Anna Harbacevich (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a season-high three goals in the contest to increase her total amount to five goals. Redshirt sophomore attack Shannon O'Neal (Severna Park, Md.) and senior midfielder Emily Nosek (Bel Air, Md.) both had three goals each on the afternoon.  O'Neal now has netted 29 total goals on the season, while Nosek has 24 in her senior campaign.

Wingate freshman goalkeeper Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) posted 11 saves and picked up the win. She went the distance Saturday. Newberry freshman goalie Brandy Bowman (Irvine, Ca.) recorded 12 saves and took the loss. She also played 60 minutes Saturday.
