Ander’s overtime game-winner gives #11 Wingate 2-1 victory over Lander

Wingate, N.C.----2015 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) scored four minutes into the first overtime Saturday night, leading the 11th-ranked Bulldogs to a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Lander University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 2-0 on the year, while the Bearcats fall to 1-3 overall.

Wingate got on the board with just under eight minutes to go in the first half. A loose ball in the box was touched towards the middle by Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) and re-directed towards the goal by Vicente Munoz (Santiago, Chile). Junior Garret Bridgewater (Cape Carteret, N.C.) was there and found the back of the net for the first time in his career.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead to intermission, out-shooting Lander 9-4, with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Lander scored the equalizer with 11 minutes left in regulation, when Hugo Delhommelle ripped a low line drive through the defense on a free kick from just outside the box, tucking it into the left corner to make it 1-1, sending the game to overtime.

The Bulldogs got the game-winner less than five minutes into the extra frame. Christian Szalay (Vienna, Austria) send a pass to Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England), who found Ander towards the left side of the box. The 2015 All-American ripped one into the opposite corner, giving Wingate the victory.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Bearcats 17-10 on the night, with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Juul and Ander led Wingate with five shots each, with Juul taking a match-high three shots on goal. All-American goalkeeper Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected four saves for the Bulldogs, while Dean Cowdroy registered four saves for Lander.  

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, opening conference play at home against Mars Hill at 7:30 p.m.
