Anderson, S.C.----The 10th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs remained perfect on the season, getting a pair of first half goals in a 3-1 victory at Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon. Wingate moves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Wingate got on the board in the 28th minute, when junior forward
Elma N'For (Yaounde, Cameroon) found the back of the net for the second time in as many games, getting behind the defense and beating the keeper one-on-one to make it 1-0.
The Bulldogs struck again three minutes later. Sophomore forward
Nate Evans (Greenville, N.C.) netted the first goal of his career, heading home a feed from junior midfielder
Mateo Correa (Medellin, Colombia) to give Wingate a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs took a three-goal lead in the opening minutes of the second half when N'For scored his third goal of the year, taking a loose ball in front of the net and registering his first multi-goal game in a Wingate uniform.
Anderson avoided the shutout when
Lars Kaula scored off a
Brad Du Plooy assist with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
Wingate out-shot Anderson 16-10 on the day, with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. All-American goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had three saves for the Bulldogs, while
Devon Ashy collected six saves for Anderson. N'For and
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) led all players with three shots each. Both players registered two shots on goal apiece.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Queens for a 7:30 p.m. start.
