Juul leads #9 Wingate to 2-1 victory at Queens

Charlotte, N.C.----Wingate University senior midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) had a goal and an assist Wednesday night, leading the ninth-ranked Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory at Queens University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. The Bulldogs improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Royals fall to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

After 33 scoreless minutes, the Bulldogs found the back of the net twice in 34 seconds. Juul struck first, beating the keeper and finding the right corner of the goal to register his second goal of the season.

Redshirt junior midfielder Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) provided an immediate insurance goal, taking a cross and netting his third goal of the season to make it 2-0. Juul and junior midfielder Christian Szalay (Vienna, Austria) assisted on the play.

The Royals cut the lead in half with five minutes remaining in the first half when Oemer Okyar scored on a penalty kick, making it 2-1.

Wingate ended the night with a 14-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Reigning SAC Player of the Year Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) registered a match-high four shots for the Bulldogs, while Juul took three shots, all of which were on goal.

All-American goalkeeper Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had a pair of saves for the Bulldogs. Sergio Lemus registered four saves for the Royals.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Newberry at 7:30 p.m.
