Queens hangs on for 2-1 victory over Wingate

Charlotte, N.C.----The Queens University Royals scored a pair of first half goals Wednesday night en route to a 2-1 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Royals improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Queens jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three minutes in when Charlotte Ring scored her second goal of the season, off an assist from Miranda Dechant.

The Royals added to their lead with 23 minutes remaining in the first half, when Thea Mallett found the back of the net for the sixth time this year, making it 2-0 heading to intermission. Queens outshot Wingate 11-5 in the opening half, with each team taking three shots on goal.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 60th minute. Junior forward Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) ripped one from just outside the box, beating the keeper for her second goal of the year to make it 2-1.

Wingate controlled things in the second half, out-shooting Queens 14-5 to end the night with a 19-16 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.

Rachel Quest collected seven saves for the Royals, while junior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) had a pair of saves for Wingate. All-American midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) took a match-high five shots for the Bulldogs, with two shots on goal.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, returning home to host Newberry at 5 p.m. Wingate is 3-0 at home this year, outscoring opponents 9-0.
