Veit gives Wingate 1-0 double overtime victory over Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman defender Carly Veit (Pinehurst, N.C.) scored four minutes into the second overtime Wednesday night, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate improves to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in league play.

Each team took five shots in the opening half, with Wingate holding a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had the best chance in the final seconds of the first half, but a shot from freshman Morgan Zanardi (Haverhill, Mass.) hit the crossbar.

Catawba held a 6-2 advantage in shots during the second half, with each team registering one shot on goal. A shot from Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) was saved in the 53rd minute by Catawba goalkeeper Shelby Thompson. Wingate keeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) stopped a shot from Jovana Sanchez in the 83rd minute.

Each team registered two shots in the first overtime, with no shots on goal.

Wingate finally got on the board with just over six minutes left in the second overtime. A pass from junior Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) found Veit making a run down the left side. The freshman beat her defender, then sent one past the charging keeper into the corner of the goal to give the Bulldogs the victory. It is the second goal of the year for the freshman.

Catawba ended the night with a 15-10 advantage in shots, with Wingate holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Jones collected three saves for the Bulldogs, while Thompson had three saves for the Indians.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 5 p.m. on Senior Day.
