Bulldogs drop double overtime heartbreaker against Lenoir-Rhyne

Wingate, N.C.----Lenoir-Rhyne's Aqsa Mushtaq scored two minutes into the second overtime Saturday evening, giving the Bears a 1-0 victory at Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Bears improves to 10-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-3 overall and 7-2 in the SAC.

The first half went scoreless, with each team taking three shots. Lenoir-Rhyne had a pair of shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, while Taylor Krakower (Wayne, N.J.) had the one shot on frame for the Bulldogs.

Wingate had a chance early in the second half, but a shot from Krakower was turned away by Alayna Morris. The rebound came to senior Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) in the box, but her shot went just wide of the left post. Leyble had another good chance in the 81st minute, firing a shot from the left side of the box, but Morris made another great save to keep Wingate off the board.

After a scoreless first overtime, Lenoir-Rhyne struck early in the second overtime. Mushtaq made a series of moves to beat two Wingate defenders and get into the box, where she fired one towards the left corner to give the Bears the victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Morris had four saves for the Bears, while senior Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected four saves for the Bulldogs.

Wingate wraps up the regular season next Saturday, traveling to Tusculum for a 5 p.m. start.
