Greeneville, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory at Tusculum College Saturday evening in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate ends the regular season 9-3 overall and 8-2 in league play, earning the number two seed in next week's SAC Tournament. Tusculum falls to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in league play.
Junior midfielder
Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) got the scoring started in the 24th minute, working a give and go with junior midfielder
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) and netting her third goal of the year.
Senior defender
Kaitlyn Fletcher (Jacksonville, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs a two-goal lead in the 63rd minute, getting a double assist from Moore and freshman
Carly Veit (Pinehurst, N.C.) and scoring her first goal of the season.
Rachel Roberts scored her third goal of the season less than two minutes later, with
Carly Mill and
Carly Culler assisting on the play to make it 2-1.
Wingate regained its two-goal lead with 14 minutes remaining in regulation when junior midfielder
Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored her fifth goal of the year off assists from Fletcher and junior defender
Caileigh Apicella (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) to make it 3-1.
The Bulldogs finished the night with a 17-12 advantage in shots, holding an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) had four saves for the Bulldogs, while
Hannah Graham collected five saves for the Pioneers.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday night in the opening round of the 2017 SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs are the number two seed, hosting seventh-seeded Catawba at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals Friday night at 7 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
