Hartsville, S.C.----After 56 scoreless minutes, the Wingate University Bulldogs scored three times in a five-minute stretch en route to a 3-0 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night. Wingate wins its seventh straight, moving to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 1-7-1 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Bulldogs outshot Coker 11-0 in the opening half, with 10 shots on goal and six corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net.
Wingate got on the board in the 59th minute. Senior forward
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) sent in a low cross from right of the box, where junior midfielder
Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was there to net her third goal of the year.
Zickert struck again less than three minutes later, registering the second multi-goal game of her career to give the 'Dogs a two-goal cushion.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute, when junior
Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) slid one towards Leyble, who netted her team-best fifth goal of the year.
Wingate outshot the Cobras 29-2 on the day, with a 20-1 advantage in shots on goal. Senior
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) and junior
Abbey Frail (Winston-Salem, N.C.) combined for the shutout, with Frail collecting a save in the final seconds.
Samantha Hoffman registered 12 saves for Coker.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 14, traveling to Carson-Newman to face the ninth-ranked Eagles at 5 p.m.
